5 Ways to make a Windows Computer Faster

5 Ways to make a Windows Computer Faster

This question has been asked several times and almost every SysAdmin has answered it. There is no hard and fast rule to this question. As the technology keeps on changing we can take benefit of these developments and do some tweaks.

1. Use SSD instead of a HDD as primary disk for your OS installation

If you can afford, buy a used SSD of at least 128 GB. You can get that in Pakistan around PKR 4 to 5 thousand. This will super boost your start up as well as over all performance.  Though you can install a mechanical disk as secondary disk for data storage but understand this; Mechanical Disks are the biggest bottle necks in our computers.

To install secondary disk in Laptops there is a trade off, if your laptop is old one and doesn’t allow you to separately install secondary disk. You will need an Optical Drive Caddy which is universal and only costs PKR 1,500. remove the optical drive install your second hard drive in caddy and install that caddy in your laptop upgrade bay where usually optical drive is installed.

2. Use a light weight antivirus

Though I am not marketing, but I have used 360 Total Security Free version and found it’s light weight, consumes low resources and gets the job done at a basic level. Check your system for antiviruses periodically at least once a month.

3. Start up Programs

In windows 8 and 8.1 it is quite easy to manage start up programs following is a link which will guide you on how to manage them. Take a look periodically on your start up applications.

4. Toolbars, Extension and Plugins

Now a days we spend most of our time on web browsers and while in the quest to get free software we open doors for useless, spam and malicious  Toolbars, Extensions and Plugins. It is recommended to keep checking your browsers and if you find any thing suspicious google it.

Remember toolbars are the easiest way to get spam and malicious software or code in to your computer. Therefore avoid them until absolutely necessary. If it is necessary to install a toolbar then do some research on google and read some reviews.

Following are few links which will guide you on how to keep track of extensions, addons and plugins.

5. Disk Clean up, Windows Updates and Desktop icons and Folders

Performing Disk cleans ups once a month is preferable to keep your computer in good health. Free space on system partition, hence allowing operating system to perform better.

Most of us just neglect the Windows updates; I agree its time consuming task at first but compared to trouble that we have to bear in case of system failure and worst is data loss, this effort and time stands nothing compared to that. Always keep your system updated.

Most users keep their desktops cluttered with several files and folders. Desktop is merely a folder which displays your files on top, the more files you keep on your desktop the more time its going to load your desktop. Keep only current files on desktop and arrange them in folders and if they are no longer needed move them from desktop.

I usually keep only 2 or 3 shortcuts on my desktop and all other files are arranged in Documents, Music, Picture and etc folders. Following are links for disk clean up and windows updates.

Hope these tips help people.
